obtaining
KiteFlight and the books
The programs KiteFlight (by Peter van den Hamer), Plot and Sputnik (by Peter Ruinard) are historically linked to a familiar series of books on stunt kites. The first book, "Stunt Kites to Make and Fly" by Servaas van der Horst and Nop Velthuizen, was published in 1991 by the Dutch publishing house THOTH Publishers.
| Title | ISBN code | Language |
|---|---|---|
| Stunt Kites | 90 6868 052 8 | English |
| Stuntvliegers | 90 6868 035 8 | Dutch |
The second book, Stunt Kites II (1994), is available
in English, Dutch and German:
| Title | ISBN code | Language |
|---|---|---|
| Stunt Kites II | 90 6868 085 4 | English |
| Lenkdrachen | 90 6868 086 2 | German |
| Cerfs-volants de sport | 90 6868 126 5 | French |
| Stuntvliegers II | 90 6868 084 6 | Dutch |
Both books are readily found at kite stores but can also be found/ordered at book shops or ordered from the publisher.
The diskette
The High Density (HD=1.44M) 3.5" floppy, Kites 2.0 (1995), is the successor to the Double Density (DD=720K) floppy Kites 1.0 (1994). The floppy is available in English only (although a key documentation file for routine developers is included in English, German, French and Dutch).
The disk is sold separately from both books. The floppy can be considered an appendix to the books because the Plot and Sputnik programs create printouts of all major kites described in both books. The floppy can alternatively be considered a separate product because the KiteFlight program does not require either book in any way.
The software is packaged in a "CD box" (no ISBN number) containing the 3.5" disk. The authors of the book are friends of the developers of the software (or the other way around, I keep forgetting ;-).
When ordering the floppy by mail, please check that you are indeed getting Kite 2.0 (rather than the slightly cheaper, 1 year older and much smaller Kite 1.0). You can obtain the floppy from the following sources. The price (excluding shipping) is roughly in the $15-$20 range. There are various sources of the disk (see below).
Buying KiteFlight at kite stores
Well stocked kite stores typically carry both books as well as the floppy. They are probably easiest to get in Holland, Germany, Britain and the USA. The publisher has told me that availability in France should improve significantly in the second half of 1995.
THOTH Publishing (Holland)
You or your book store can order directly from the publisher, THOTH Publishing:
THOTH Publishing
Kite Lines magazine (USA)
You can order from the US magazine Kite Lines: they have a section at the back of the magazine called 'The Kite Lines Bookstore' where you can mail order both the Stunt Kites I/II books and the Kite 2.0 floppy. The order form states:
"We accept checks, money orders or credit card charges on VISA or MasterCard. Foreign payments must be in U.S. dollars and must use either a U.S. bank, an international money order or a credit card. (Credit cards automatically convert foreign currencies to U.S. dollars.) Sorry, no COD; no billing except VISA or MasterCard."
Kite Lines charges $19.95 for Kite 2.0 and a few dollars extra for shipping and handling.
Drachen Magazin (Germany)
You can order from the 'DRAmashop' at the back of
the German language
Drachen Magazin.
It costs DM 22,50. DRAma charges DM 14 shipping on any order
(or DM 8 if you live in Germany).
I don't know if the new English language edition of DRAma carries the disk. The May/Jun/Jul 1995 issue (Vol 1, Issue 2) didn't have a DRAmashop (yet?).
Sources in France
This magazine will probably contain advertisements for Kite 2.0 and the French version of Stunt Kites II in the future. I haven't seen the advertisements yet.
KiteFlight is also available in France from:
Sources in South Africa
If you happen to live all the way down in South Africa, you might want to try contacting Rare Air Kites in Cape Town (operated by Zbys Kacmarek). He should be able to help.
Sources in Japan
One registered user wrote that he had obtained KiteFlight from a kite shop named "South Fields". As my Japanese isn't too good, I was unable to obtain the address of that shop. Info anybody?
Sources in Great Britain
KiteFlight is sold at
VliegerOp (Holland)
You can order from VliegerOp, a major kite company in Holland. They sell (are a shop), manufacture, import and export kite equipment. The phone number of VliegerOp is +31 70 3858586. These people can speak English and probably German.
Sources in the USA
Sources in the United States which are known to stock the Kite 2.0 diskette include:
Note that these are just sources which I happen to know about. I suspect that there are more (given that What's Up is in the wholesale business only).
Panic
My contract does not allow me to sell the floppy. On the (more) practical side, I simply don't have a stock of the Kite 2.0 CD boxes. I obviously do have a copy myself and can provide "temporary relief" in emergencies.
A service is incidentally available for providing (free) maintenance updates to registered users with Internet access. You register by sending me an E-mail (by clicking here) and telling me your address, the version you own and where you obtained it.
Note that I do not have the time/resources to mail floppies to registered users who don't have Internet access (so find a friend with Internet!).
